Cookies

Cookies Notice

While we’re very proud of the delicious cookies we sell in our shops, this page is about a different sort of cookie. Here you can learn about how we, Pret a Manger, use cookies on our website and how to manage your preferences.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a text file containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies do lots of different jobs, such as letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences and goods and services you wish to purchase, and providing you with content that is relevant to you and your interests. You can find more information about cookies from these websites: www.allaboutcookies.orgwww.aboutcookies.orgwww.youronlinechoices.eu When using our website and our other online services, such as our mobile application, you can choose to agree or refuse to our use of cookies as described in this policy.

When we talk about cookies, we also implicitly refer to other similar technologies such as tagging and SDKs. We use SDKs in our app and pixel tagging on our websites. A pixel or tag is an image that once imbedded in an email or web page connects to a file stored on our web server and allows us to determine customer interest in our marketing emails or website content. These allow us to see which promotions seem of interest to our customers, and if a particular offer seems to interest you. We may use this information to promote or send offers which appear to be more relevant to you.

Across our sites, you can manage the cookies we place on your device through our Cookies Manager which is available at any time via the ‘Cookies Settings’ button at the bottom left hand corner of any page. You can also opt out using your browser settings and the process for opting out is described on the websites listed above. Alternatively, you can opt out by using the individual opt out links for specific cookies and technologies listed below.

Find out more about how to opt out of cookies through your browser settings through the websites above.

How long are cookies stored for?

In order to achieve their purpose and improve your user experience individual cookies are set to an appropriate retention period, up to a maximum of 365 days. You can find a comprehensive breakdown of how long our cookies are stored for in our Cookies List which is available at the bottom of this page. In general, cookies fall into two categories;

Persistent cookies

These cookies remain on a user's device for the period specified in the cookie. They are activated each time that the user visits the website that created that particular cookie

Session cookies

These cookies allow website operators to link the actions of a user during a browser session. A browser session starts when a user opens the browser window and finishes when they close the browser window. Session cookies are created temporarily. Once you close the browser, all session cookies are deleted.

What are first and third party cookies?

Whether a cookie is first or third party depends on where it comes from and can be sent by different parties. If the cookie comes from our site it is a first party cookie set by us. If it comes from another site or organisation, such as our suppliers or business partners, it is a third-party cookie, specifically chosen by us to provide a service, such as a more personalised visit. For example, you may be on a website that has ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ buttons for social network sites. If you click one, the social network site will put a ‘third party’ cookie on your device. That cookie may then collect data about you and send it to them too. You will need to set your privacy choices on their site, to tell them how they can use your data.

What types of cookies do the Pret websites and the Pret app use?

You can find a full list of cookies and other technologies used by Pret in our Cookies List which is available at the bottom of this page

Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are necessary in order for you to navigate our website, to create an account and to place online orders. They remember things such as what is in your basket, your name and delivery details and pass this information from one page of our website to the next. Without them you won’t be able to order online because when you move through the booking process, the website won’t remember the information you’ve already given us. For the website you can opt out of Strictly Necessary cookies through your browser settings, though doing so will result in you not being able to use our website properly. For the app you are not able to opt out of these as by doing so will make the app portal unusable.

Functionality Cookies

These cookies enable us to remember choices you make and provide enhanced, more personal features. For example, we place a cookie on your computer or mobile device to identify your country and (if applicable) language preferences.

Performance Cookies

These cookies collect information about how visitors use our website, such as which pages visitors go to most often and if they get error messages. We also use performance cookies such as Google Optimise for website personalisation and A/B testing. This helps us improve how our website works. The Performance cookies we use are provided by third parties, though we retain control over how your cookies data is used.

If you don’t consent to performance cookies we will still be able to see that someone has used our site but we will not be able to connect these events to a unique user.

We use cookies and SDKs provided by Google Analytics to help us understand how you got to our website or app, to measure the effectiveness of our advertising and understand how visitors use our website or app. The information helps us learn things such as what pages are more attractive to our visitors, which of our products most interest our customers and the kind of offers our customers like to see. To opt out of Google Analytics on the website go to https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout and to opt out of analytics on the app, visit the Privacy settings screen in App Settings.

We use Google Signals which collects enhanced data about our customers in order to provide additional features like cross-device audiences and insights. When enabled, Google Analytics will collect visit information and associate it with Google information from accounts of signed-in users who have consented to this association for the purpose of ads personalisation. This Google information may include end user location, search history, YouTube history, and data from sites that partner with Google—and is used to provide aggregated and anonymised insights into customer cross device behaviours. You can update your preferences, access or delete this data at any time by logging into My Activity.

How else does the app store data on my phone?

The app uses your device’s local storage - data which is stored on your mobile device. The data is kept alive even if the app is not running but is deleted when the app is uninstalled by the user. This is managed by the operating system and may vary between iOS and Android devices.

So that customers can access their account and orders through the app, we temporarily store order, account and subscription data in the local storage of customers’ mobile devices. We store, for example, your name, contact details and items purchased.

Adjust

Adjust is an analytics platform that helps us to track and improve our mobile app with solutions for measuring and optimizing campaigns and protecting user data. Adjust’s Measure solution helps us to understand the effectiveness of our app marketing by telling us where our app users are coming from and how they shop with us along with insights across the customer lifecycle. You can find out more about Adjust’s use of data here; https://www.adjust.com/terms/privacy-policy/

Push Notifications

We use SDKs to allow us to send push notifications and location-based messages through our app. You opt into this after you download the app and can opt out through your device’s settings screen at any time. If you choose to allow us to send you Push Notifications or Location messages, we will use the data provided to help provide you with local information and services to enhance your customer experience.  How up to date is the information in this policy?

We will update this policy if we introduce new cookies or change the way we use the cookies described above. Third party websites

Our website contains links to websites managed by third parties. We don’t know what cookies those other websites use. Please check the cookies policies of those third party websites if you would like to know more.
